Major Nisa retailer switches to One Stop Franchise

10 August 2015

Scarborough-based independent retailer, Wilson Retail Limited, is moving its entire store estate from Nisa to One Stop, as it becomes the first group to join the growing franchise operation. At the same time, Wilson Retail is set to open its ninth store, which will also be a One Stop franchise.

Brothers Danny and Craig Wilson, together with their parents and fellow business partners Nigel and Gillian, opened their first store in 2005 and currently operate six stores in the Scarborough area, one in Bridlington and the most recent addition in Hull, which opened in late 2014. The eight existing stores will undergo the usual transition to become a One Stop, with EPoS installation commencing in the first two stores this week, followed by their full refits towards the end of the year. As a result, all stores will be trading with One Stop by early September and will be fully transformed in time for Christmas 2015. The new store in South Cave, a village to the west of Hull, will open as an instant launch this Thursday, following its conversion from an empty furniture shop, with full store launch activity planned for Saturday 15 August.

“We can’t wait to start trading with One Stop, it’s been a revelation since we began working with them,” new franchisee Danny revealed. “We had been happy with Nisa up until a year ago, as there weren’t really any viable alternatives prior to One Stop launching their franchise model. But we felt let down by Nisa when we opened our Hull store and it led us to look at other options. Since we resigned in March, we’ve met a number of franchisees and we’re happy that we’ve made the right decision. We’re confident that One Stop Franchise will bring major improvements to our business in terms of the operating and ordering systems, which will save us hours and hours, plus of course better margins. And the strength of their customer offer, which has a lot more consistent promotions, will drive higher sales because it suits our customer base perfectly.”

Talking about the new South Cave store and Wilson Retail’s future expansion plans, Danny continued: “We’re excited about opening our latest store; it’s a good site and will do really well. We’ve already had a great response in the village, with very positive feedback, so we’re expecting a solid start. This has been the easiest store we’ve opened – One Stop’s knowledge and assistance have been invaluable during the process. They’ve given us so much more input on store layout and we have the reassurance that it’s based on the insight used in their own stores. Their co-investment in our stores also means that we’ll be able to improve every one of our shops. Our focus over the next few months will be to get the shops transitioned and get used to the new ways of working, but having opened almost a store a year for the last eight years, we’re keen to open more when the right opportunity arises. We’re convinced that working with the One Stop model will help us to grow our business in a sustainable way, so next year could be another year of expansion!”

Andrew King, One Stop Franchise Director, commented:
“It’s great to welcome the Wilsons to One Stop Franchise and it’s a credit to our team that we’ve attracted such ambitious and successful retailers. As our first group within franchise, we’re sure that we’ll gain some additional learnings during the transition process, but the partnership is already very strong. We look forward to working with them to grow their existing stores and helping them to achieve their future expansion plans. Whether you have one or two stores or a group of stores, we’re confident that One Stop Franchise has something to offer independent retailers who are willing to try something different to drive their business forward.”
