One Stop Store Rises Like a Phoenix from the flames of burnt down pub in Dudley

4 November 2016

Since closing over 5 years ago the Hill Tavern pub on Watsons Green Road, Dudley, has repeatedly been targeted by vandals. In 2011, 20 firefighters were called to tackle a blaze after arsonists had once again set fire to the building. Suffering considerable fire damage beyond repair, the site was branded an eyesore by the local community.

After careful consideration had been given to the needs of local residents and the demand for housing in the area, the Amin family purchased the building and concluded that the best way to breathe life into the site, would be through a convenience store with apartments situated above.

Already successful multi-site operators father Atul and his sons Rakesh, and Dhanesh were not put off by the sheer scale of work and significant investment the project required. The pub was demolished and a brand new building was constructed with only its name retained. Franchisee Rakesh commented, “We chose One Stop because of the extensive range and the strength of their offer, we were particularly impressed with the margins on promotions and the strong supporting POS, there always seems to be theatre in-store and many of the offers are as competitive as the supermarkets. When we spoke to other Franchisees they all complimented One Stop’s modern ways of working - it really is a unique model with simple processes. With us managing other businesses the more time-saving automation we can bring in, means less time away from the shop floor and more precious time with our family.”

One Stop Tavern Hill was officially opened on 29th October by local children who dressed up for the ‘Spooktacular Family Fun Day’. The Halloween themed grand launch featured a bouncy castle, face painter, along with free candy floss, buffet, and toffee apples for all. A sprinkle of additional excitement was added through a best Halloween costume competition, and to ensure everyone left a winner all entrants received a giant tub of sweets, courtesy of One Stop.

The impressive 2000 sq. ft. build has meant that the Amin family could create 6 new jobs, all of which have been filled by local residents. The family has already formed strong links with the two local schools and all proceeds raised through One Stop’s 5p ‘Carriers for Causes’ scheme will be split across the two for new school equipment.

“The store is already proving a huge success with the locals”, added Dhanesh. “Everyone has thanked us for restoring the site and have said how impressed they are with the store and all of the additional services we are bringing to the community, and we hope to further improve the store with a Post Office. We are so pleased with the result and would like to thank all the One Stop Franchise team for the level of support we have received throughout – loads of the team even gave up their Saturday to attended the launch, such amazing commitment.”
