Secretary of State for Wales Alun Cairns opens first One Stop in Barry, Cardiff.

27 October 2016

On Saturday 15th October Secretary of State for Wales and Vale of Glamorgan MP Alun Cairns, opened the first One Stop Franchise in Barry, Cardiff. Alun cut the ribbon for the store’s official opening and commented: “ Selley’s is not just a local shop, but a Park Crescent institution. Local people are delighted that it is to continue on in larger premises with the same friendly community-orientated owners and staff. I was honoured to be asked to officially open the new shop. Jackie and Garry Hughes’ expansion of Selleys is a reflection of their business acumen and hard work, as well as a vote of confidence in Barry’s local economy.”

Selly’s newsagent has been serving the local neighbours and residents of Barry, Cardiff, for over 16 years, so the brief to One Stop was to preserve the heritage of their small CTN business, while expanding into a larger grocery offer. Husband and wife owners Garry and Jackie Hughes took over the original shop which had been in existence for more than 100 years – so they were keen to preserve its history while expanding to better serve the needs of their local customers.

The team was operating out of the small 500 sq. ft. store offering a limited range and services, but with a loyal customer base through their strong HND service (over 700 deliveries a day) and first class customer service, they knew the potential was there. Mr Hughes said: “We needed to progress since the Post Office closed at this end of the crescent, as all local businesses have been affected. We needed to expand, offer more products and bring a bit of life back to this end of the road.”

In order to evolve their offer and accommodate their customers new shopping habits, they obtained a free site on the opposite side of the road. With the combined help of a NatWest funding package and the market-leading £50k refit package One Stop franchise offers, the store has relocated across the road and now stands at an impressive 1,700 sq. ft.

The new store, opposite the existing Selleys premises, has created six new jobs in the community, which have been filled by local Barry residents and previous customers! The store now employs eight staff from Barry, which are supported by a large newspaper delivery team. Mrs Hughes added: “We’ve had so many positive comments, it’s a leap forward for us and we’re thrilled that we’ve been able to employ more staff. We aim to give every customer the same friendly, personal service you don’t often get in the big supermarkets – service with a smile”.

The store now meets the needs of the local residents stocking exciting new product lines at competitive prices. A welcome addition is the fantastic range of fresh and chilled produce, along with a fully stocked off license and great meal deals including the extensive £3 lunch time deal and the 2 for £4 evening dinner offer.

All the money raised on the day of the launch went to Sully-based charity Ty Hafan children’s hospice - a cause supported throughout Barry and the Vale. Ty Hafan ambassador, Bryan Jeffrey’s congratulated Mr and Mrs Hughes on their One Stop venture and for the support they provide to Ty Hafan. Mr Jeffrey’s said: “It is great to see an established Barry business expand. Gary and Jackie have been serving the people of Barry for many years and we all wish them continued success in their fantastic new premises. We are also deeply appreciative of their continuing commitment to Ty Hafan.”

Andrew King, One Stop Franchise Director added: “We’re extremely pleased with how the store has been received. Selleys has been the hub of the local community for over 16 years, so we were thrilled to receive so many compliments regarding how the new store looks and the additional services it will provide. The community has expressed how happy they are that Garry & Jackie still own the store and that it is still independently run. There’s lots of benefits that come with joining One Stop Franchise but the unparalleled level of business support we provide, will ensure their investment is not only future proofed, but continues to evolve for both the franchisees and the local community. The official launch was a huge success, we are all very proud to have been with them on the day and would like to thank Alun Cairns for his support.”
